Find your next hard drive at Refurb
On this page you will find our wide range of both external and internal hard drives – you will find both the classic HDD disks as well as the newer and super fast SSD disks. A SSD hard drive is a good choice if you prefer speed to large amounts of storage space. SSD disks are so fast that your computer can boot in less than 30 seconds, and can generally open and shut down programs quickly and efficiently. Note that SSD disks are 2.5 inches in size, and desktop computers use 3.5-inch disks. It will be a necessity to have a frame/holder, which is called a bracket, if a stationary machine is to be upgraded with SSD. This allows a 2.5" SSD disk to fit in the desktop that normally uses 3.5" disks. If you purchase a refurbished desktop computer from Refurb, with an upgrade to SSD hard drive, we will of course install bracket and disk for you.
How do I find the right hard drive?
When you need to find the right disk, the first step is to make sure you are looking at the right disks – that is, hard drives that will fit in your machine. Most desktops use 3.5" disks, but smaller models such as USDT, or USFF types can also use the 2.5" disks normally used, if you need a laptop hard drive. A quick Google search can often reveal what's in your particular computer, so that you're sure the disc you're looking at will fit in your particular machine – alternatively, you're always welcome to contact us, and we'd like to assist you in figuring out which disk is in your computer.
We always recommend an SSD hard drive
When you're looking at hard drives, you might also come across what's called a Msata or M.2 Disk. These are hard drives on small circuit boards that some machines use. In case you need a M.2 disk, pay attention to the size of the disk physically — for example, 2280, which is the most normal M.2 disk.
After you've figured out how big the disk should be, assess what you need. Here is theusual rule that a SSD hard drive is faster but costs more per GB, and a HDD is slower but costs less per GB. We always recommend that you have a fast and reliable SSD hard drive in the machine itself, and that you have either a secondary or external disk for data storage. This can with benefit be a classic HDD, as here you can get a much larger amount of storage space at the same or lower price.
How much space do I need on my hard drive?
Most people will be able to do with 120-256 GB of hard drive space, as many programs and documents do not take up much space on the machine itself. However, you should be aware of the possible of lack of space if you have large amounts of film or pictures stored on the machine. The same applies if you need to use the machine for gaming – and then have large games stored on the machine – or have to work with virtual machines that can quickly fill a smaller hard drive. As an example of data usage, a normal feature film usually takes up between 2-6 GB – depending, of course, on quality.
Change your hard drive and guarantee
Many have heard about the benefits of upgrading to an SSD hard drive – or has been short of space and has started looking into buying a new disk, but has stopped because it can compromise the warranty on the computer to change the hard drive yourself. To be sure any upgrade does not go beyond your guarantee or warranty, the best place to start is at the store where you originally bought the machine. Their guarantee conditions will usually mention just how you can handle the machine and what upgrades you can make yourself, without affecting guarantee and warranty. If you purchased a refurbished laptop or desktop computer from Refurb, you can change the disc on a laptop without compromising the guarantee, if this is available from a service cover. A service cover is a small latch that is only attached with 1 or 2 screws on the underside of the machine. If you have changed the hard drive on a desktop computer, we will not cover errors in the drive you have inserted yourself, but the rest of the machine will still be covered. Please note that the Support Department may want the original disc to be sent in a warranty case. This is to make sure it is not the new disk that creates problems.
If you are unsure whether you can change your disk and/or how to do so, you are always welcome to contact us at info@refurb.eu>.
