RAM – your computer's memory
RAM is short for 'Random Access Memory'. This is your computer's memory. At Refurb, in addition to ready-assembled computers, we also sell various hardware components – including RAM, which is the memory in your computer. Many people mistakenly believe that RAM itself speeds up the computer, but in fact RAM's function is to assist more with many active and simultaneous processes (unlike the hard drive where the "passive" things are stored). This means that if you use your computer for many things at the same time, it can be an advantage to upgrade your computer's RAM.
Ram for desktops and laptops
Basically all computers have ram (memory) – the question is what type to choose. The rule is usually you should always choose SO-DIMM memory for your laptop while DIMM memory is for desktop computers. However, there are a few exceptions – if in doubt, you are always welcome to contact us by email info@refurb.eu.
How to choose RAM?
Some of the important things to be aware of when choosing memory for your computer is, for example, how many RAM slots your computer has, since you can often buy RAMi packs (16 GB of RAM can thus be purchased as 2 x 8 GB). You should be aware of whether you are about to buy your RAM as one or more RAM bars.
Besides that it is important to be aware of the type of RAM you should choose (DDR3, DDR4 or something completely different?). And last but not least, what speed of the RAMs your computer supports – is it 1666 mHz or 3000 mHz? Not all motherboards support all speeds – and that's why it's important to choose RAM at the right speed.
